Annual Memorial Day 2 Mile

On the day that we honor the memories of those who have given their lives in war for their country, the Virgin Islands Pace Runners staged the 24th running of the Memorial Day 2 Mile Road Race.

A water-soaked course with overcast skies was the setting for the two mile-down hill course from Beeston Hill to the Scale House of the National Park Service in Christiansted.  It was fitting that Billy Bohlke, a military pilot with the United States Air Force and just completing a tour of duty in Afghanistan, led the way to first place overall as he ran the two miles in nine 9 minutes and 11 seconds.  Top V.I. high school runner, Juan Robles of St. Croix Central High School, was right on Bohlke’s heels all the way as they went through the one mile mark in Estate Contentment, in 4:25.  He finished second in 9:16; Seymour Walters of the St. Croix Educational Complex High School was third in 10:23; Richard Jeanpierre was fourth in 11:32; Bruce Daugherty was fifth in12:44; Brad Chafee was sixth in 13:20 and Julio Sanchez was seventh in 14:36.
