Frenchman takes Paradise 5K...
Former NCAA Champ is women's winner...

April 28, 2011--St. Croix, Virgin Islands--The 23rd Paradise 5K was held at The Buccaneer Resort on late Thursday afternoon; the annual race is contested over the same run course that the triathletes for the St. Croix Ironman 70.3 Triathlon have use for many years.  Although very scenic, the course is challenging.  In this the 23rd Paradise 5K, triathlete Vill Aume from France took advantage of the opportunity to run the course under race conditions although he was unchallenged all the way as he took first place with a time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds.  Mireille Smith of the St. Croix Track Club, 1992 NCAA National Indoor Champion in the 800 meters (six-time All-America while at Eastern Michigan University) and 2009 winner took first place for women in 22:58.

Awards were made to the top ten male and top ten female participants, including medals, race certificate and race tee-shirt.

race tee-shirt.

Notes:

1] The majority of the Buccaneer course is very hilly with exception of the flat portion on western and it’s very scenic as half of the run is just feet from seashore.

2] George Jules of St. Croix, the winner of this race several times, led the runners on bike for this year’s race.

2] CC Wilkins of Goldsboro, North Carolina was spotted race day with a retro Paradise 5K Tee-Shirt from 1996. He comes to St. Croix for triathlon every year and promises to promote The 10th St. Croix International Marathon coming up December 4.

2] Originally the Paradise 5K was held on the Sunday a week before the America’s Paradise Triathlon back when most of the triathletes traveled to St. Croix a week, sometimes two or three weeks before the race to acclimatize and would use the 5K as a final tune-up.

3] The original course was Southgate to Christiansted.  The race record was set the first year in 1988 by Phil Caine in the 15’s (15:02 unofficially)

4] The Paradise 5K is organized by the Virgin Islands Pace Runners

The next race on the V.I.Pace Runners calendar is The Children Run Christiansted on Friday April 29, 6pm at Times Square (Sunday Market Square).  This race is for boys and girls 13 and under only and kicks-off Jump Up and continues down King St. 510 meters to the Scale House

Start of the 22nd Paradise 5K at The Buccaneer Resort                  V.I. Pace Runners photo by Wallace Williams

Billy Bohlke, top long distance runner in the V.I. wins his 5th Paradise 5K...Harper and Defending Champ Smith in close finish...

St. Croix, Virgin Islands, 29-04-10--Since the days of The America’s Paradise Triathlon, The Paradise 5K Road Race has been one of the featured events during triathlon week along with a road relay race finishing at the Sunny Isle Shopping Center and a run down King Street which became The Children Run Christiansted.

Over the years the majority of the races have been won by local runners.  The idea, according to Wallace Williams, V.I. Pace Runners Founder and the originator of these races, was to give local runners the opportunity to compete against pro triathletes and to give the visiting triatletes the opportunity to acclimatize and get used to competing in St. Croix.

Bohlke did his job on Thursday afternoon by being the first place overall finisher in the 22nd running of the race which switched to the Buccaneer Resort after many years of starting at Southgate and finishing in Christiansted at the Fort.  He was not challenged as he finished with a time of 16:56.  Bohlke has only been beaten once by a local runner over the past several years as Seymour Walter a high school senior at the St. Croix Educational Complex HS beat Billy in a cross-country race back in October.  Then Billy had just become a father and was working some serious hours as a pilot in his airline business and with the Air National Guard. Walters entered Thursday’s race but was suffering with a cold and did not finish the race.  Walter’s younger brother, David Walters of the St. Croix Educational Complex high school and member of the V.I. Youth Olympic Games team finished second with a time of 19:51; Jeremy Laurent of the V.I. National Guard finished third in 20:35 over the challenging and scenic course.

Mireille Smith was the defending champion of the Paradise 5K for 2009 and even though recovering from a foot injury, the former college All-American at Eastern Michigan University appeared to be recovered.  Theresa Harper a veteran of St. Croix races, apparently came into the race for once without injury as she edged out a victory in the close race with a time of 22:34; Smith was second in 22:54; Courtney Koksey was third in 23:18.

The Virgin Islands Pace Runners--Paradise 5k exciting close finish as triathletes and runners tune-up for St. Croix Half-Ironman Triathlon…

51-08 St.Croix, Virgin Islands--Seymour Walter of the Junior Baracudas Track Club/St.Croix Educational Complex High School trimmed nearly a minute off his time in the race last year to take first place in the 20th Paradise 5K at the Bucaneer Resort in St.Croix, Virgin Islands.  The group of close to 80 runners led by pro triathlete Al Sultan Farris of  Munich, Germany, hit the mile mark in 5:40.  Walter was on his heels in 5:44.  Farris led most of the race until the last 800 meter loop which is flat and takes the runners along the coast, Farris hesitated as he anticipated the finish too early and was overtaken by Walters who has used his track speed to carry him to victory.  Dion Harrision of St.Croix was third in 18:06; Prefontaine Tyler of USA was fourth in 18:44; and Todd Feastal of USA was fifth in 19:15.

Triathlete Felicity Hart, of Colsterworth, Grantham, England, led the women all the way to first place with an excellent time on a very difficult course of 18:59.  Ruth Ann David, of St.Thomas and the top local runner was less than a minute behind the winner with a time of 18:49; Theresa Harper of St.Croix was third in 22:08; Merille Smith of the St.Croix Track Club was fourth in 22:42 and Cynthia Lyons of St.Augustin, Florida was fifth in 24:02.

The Paradise 5K has been a feature of triathlon week from the beginning of the popular St. Croix triathlon from 1988. It provides runners, particularly local runners and triathletes the opportunity to race against some of the world’s top triathletes while serving as training for the run segment of the triathlon which uses the same beautiful yet challenging Bucceneer Resort run course.

The Children Run Christiansted race will be held on Friday at 6pm.  It is for children 13 and under and kicks-off the special triathlon Jump Up.  Registration starts at 5pm at Sunday Market Square on King St.  The race starts at the Sunday Market Square and finishes at the Scale house, the distance is 630 meters.
