By Wallace Williams

When originating this project (as a newspaper column back in the 80’s), little did I know that the future would provide an opportunity to have it appear all over the world on a medium we know as the Internet/world wide web. The column appeared each week for several years, in the St.Croix Avis, a daily newspaper in St.Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. This being the first to appear on the Internet, gives me time for pause. What follows is a special contribution, a special opportunity to reflect on what the library is all about, truly what’s in it for us.

I received in the mail, a reprint of the Carnegie Corporation of New York 1998 Annual Report written by Vartan Gregorian, President. It marks the celebration of 100 years since Andrew Carnegie’s "remarkable" gift to New York to establish sixty-five branch libraries. Mr. Gregorian presents an excellent essay describing "Libraries and Andrew Carnegie’s Challenge". With this opportunity, I am using it to re-introduce my column. His writing on the public library is truly inspiring.  I invite you to read Vartan's report and enjoy it.
My hope is that the other contributions which I will continue to include here will interest you as well...   May 23, 1999--"Libraries and Carnegie's Challenge"--Essay from Annual Report By: Vartan Gregorian
