Runners Cruise to St. Croix...Leave a Footprint...Donate to Boy's Club...

Brad Nugent, Assistant Commissioner of the Department of Tourism greets the participants of the 1st Leave A Footprint Cruise Run in Frederiksted on Monday Feb. 21, 2011

 Local road runners joined a group of runners representing “The Leave A Footprint Foundation” took advantage of that which the town of Frederiksted offered as an histories and idealistic 5K run course Monday morning for the first Leave A Footprint 5K Road Race.  Hosted by the Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, some 50 runners toed the start line on King St. at Fort Frederik Museum and headed north along the shore and east on Mahogany Road into the rainforest and back to the finish line at The Ann Abrahamson Pier.

In the early going, Tyler Jowasis, of St. Croix, fresh off his victory in last week’s 25th Annual Toast-To-The Captain 8.4 Mile Road Race, took the lead as he was shadowed by Billy Bohlke, Keller Head, Ivan Espinosa and Theresa Harper.  Shortly after the turn-around, close to a mile and a half out, Bohlke made his move to the lead to finish first with a time a bit slower than usual of 18:55; Tyler Jowasis held on to second in 19:53; Keller Head was third in 21:01;

Jokingly, visiting runners and those not familiar with the course were instructed to follow Theresa Harper during the race and they would find their way back to Frederiksted and the promenade on the waterfront to the finish line at Ann Abrahamson Pier.  Perhaps not by choice, that’s exactly what 46 of the 50 runners did.  Harper was in the lead group at the start and maintained her lead female position throughout the race to take first place for females with a time of 21:52.

Notes: Participants in the race included a Stroller category with a parent pushing a child; Leave a Footprint participants have a special event whereby the runner who comes closest to predicting the combined time for all the five island events they run or walk wins and a walkers category.

The race is the first of what is hoped to lead to more for St. Crioix joining St. Thomas and the successful Cruise Run which is now in its sixth year.  The Leave A Footprint Foundation approached The Virgin Islands Department of Tourism requesting assistance with staging an event in St. Croix on its first visit to St. Croix.  The Virgin Islands Pace Runners is the organizer for the event.  V.I.Pace Runners assisted STAR in St. Thomas with the organizing of the first Cruise Run.

The top three male and female finishers received a glass trophy designed by Jan Mitchell; all participants received a special V.I.Pace Runners certificate and a V.I. gift bag from The Virgin Islands Department of Tourism; the first three local male and female finishers received a Leave A Footprint tee-shirt.
